There are many ways to walk and enjoy the over 1000 kilometers of the Michinoku Coastal Trail.
There’s thru-hiking the whole trail over a single season, section hiking over a period of time, something else– you can pick any style that works for you! You could start at the northernmost point in Hachinohe, Aomori and working your way southbound, transitioning from wild natural landscapes into townscapes.
You could go northbound, starting in the towns at the southernmost point in Soma, Fukushima and gradually reaching wilder and wilder areas.
Each way to walk has its own kind of fun.
Stopping by Natori Trail Center to gather information about the trail before starting your hike at the southern terminus of Matsukawaura Environmental Park in Soma is one decent plan.
The Michinoku Coastal Trail is right next to the Pacific coastline, so it’s relatively free of snow and (though it depends on the weather that year) is usually hikable with the exception of a mountainous area or two.
